Relax Any Tension by Stretching
One way to help both your body and vocal cords feel relaxed when singing is by stretching beforehand. Yoga is a great way to help relax your body. Stretching before practice or performance will show you where your body is tense and what you need to relax. Your jaw should be able to open and close easily and not feel tight.
Sing with Your Mouth Wide Open
This is one of the most common singing mistakes. Too many people sing with their mouths too closed to get a great sound. The rule of thumb is to keep your mouth about two fingers’ width wide. By doing this you will be able to give your voice a better tone and sound. Try practicing this with audio and a mirror. Do not forget to try to relax your jaw and tongue as well. Avoid pulling your tongue to the back of the throat and just let it relax.
Be Careful with Your Breathing
One thing a lot of people do when they sing is “hold” their breath right before. You do not need to do this. You most likely do not hold our breath when you talk or read out loud. However, when a lot of people sing, they tend to hold their breath right before which causes tension in your voice.
According to professionals, you also do not need to take deep breaths while singing. Once again, you normally would not do this while talking, so why do it while singing?
One tip that makes such a huge difference is being able to balance technique and emotion. Adding emotion will help captivate the audience while performing. However, the technique should not be thrown out the window. There is a popular quote that says, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Adding emotion helps the audience connect and remember your performance.
